Fort River Refuge Walk

Fort River WMA

April 26, 2026

Tim Carter and Beth Spirito

A group of 7 of us did the boardwalk at Fort River.  Some of the usual birds were absent notably the Wood Thrush, Veery, Brown Thrasher and most of the warblers, except for a small group of Yellow-rumps.  What we did get, however, were a group of brilliant Purple Finches that were hanging out with the Goldfinches.  We saw most of our local woodpeckers and a nice display of raptors. Kestrels were at two of the boxes and we spotted flyovers of a Bald Eagle and Northern Harrier. A lone female Hooded Merganser was on the pond on Moody Bridge and a Swamp Sparrow was spotted on the road across from the pond.  Bobolinks had not appeared yet.  Click below to view complete trip list.
